Some recent household fire hazard recalls may sound familiar. Some may seem new and surprising. Remind your family NOT to take ANY warning casually. If the CPSC issues a warning, you can be assured it represents a serious threat to the well-being of your family.
Some Dishwashers are Fire Hazards
Between 1983 and 1989 G.E. made a dishwasher with a slide switch that can melt and ignite. Hotpoint made a similar one with the same problem.
- G.E. offers free rewiring repairs. Call GE at (800) 599-2929.
- Between June 1991 an October 1992 Whirlpool (Kenmore) sold a dishwasher with defective wiring for the door that can overheat and ignite.
- Whirlpool offers free repair. Call (800) 874-9481 for the repair.

Halogen torchiere floor lamps
The super-hot bulbs in these tall, sleek and very popular lamps can start fires, especially if placed too close to drapes. A specially-designed glass or wire guard can be attached to reduce the risk of fire.

Safe Alternative
Old Multi-Purpose Lighters
Children have used non child resistant multi-purpose lighters to set over 235 fires that resulted in 103 injuries and 45 deaths. Since Dec. 22, 2000, all multi-purpose lighters are required to be child-resistant. Discard the older versions.
Disposable Lighter Recall
The L.A. Lighter company has voluntarily recalled about 1800 disposable lighters because the child-safety feature does not meet federal standards. Details.
