How to Interview a Contractor

It's not as difficult as you might think.

Most Contractors Expect Tough Questions

And you shouldn't let them down!

Once you find someone you may be interested in, you have to start talking. Get to know the contractor BEFORE you sign the contract.

Here are some questions you SHOULD ask:

  • How long have you been in business?

  • Are you a licensed contractor with the state?

  • Are you affiliated with a national trade organization (for example, the Associated Locksmiths of America)?

  • Who will be assigned as project supervisor for the job?

  • What is the time frame for starting the project?

  • What is your approach to a project of this scope?

  • How do you operate? Is your company a full service or specialty firm?

  • Do you have design services available?
  • Does your company carry workers' compensation and liability insurance?

  • May I have a list of customer references for similar projects?

  • What percentage of their business is repeat or referral business?

  • How many similar projects have they completed in the past 12 months?

Other recommended interview questions include:

  • Will you provide me with a written proposal? What will it entail?

  • What type of warranty do you offer for this type of project?

  • What should I expect during the remodeling project?

  • How long will the esimate/proposal be good for?

  • How do you handle changes to the project?

  • What major products do you normally use?

  • How would you describe your company's work philosophy?

  • What can I do to prepare my home for the project?

  • What will you do to minimize the dust and dirt in my home during the job?

  • Will you provide site clean-up after the job is finished?
